Growth Series 2004
The Growth Series is concerned with the organic growth of a beautiful tree in my garden which needed to be cut down because it was diseased. It would not die but kept sending up shoots all over the garden, coming up though the paving stones, five feet high. The struggle of the tree for life seemed to me to mimic the human experience of emotional growth. This development can come from stressful traumatic or joyful events which force us to grow new shoots in different directions, sometimes abandoning our dead roots in the process. For me this indicates that the ultimate human condition is to cling to life.
